well that HPAT was..interesting..

February 28, 2010 in Study

So yesterday was the big day quite a number of us had been dreading for a few months now and i feel the need to announce to you that there is infact a god, well one for the hpat at least…

so yeah,Section 1 was,as we irish like to say, grand. Had enough time to check over it even. Not so sure about that question with the mosquitos and their wing length though, that was just plain bizarre! Section 2 was slightly harder then the practice test,I thought, but all in all it seemed to go relatively well pour moi. I actually got to check over it TWICE,I thought the clocks had stopped or something. Then it was time for the bane of my existence, section 3. I had expected to stare blankly at it for about 20 minutes before guessing every single question and seeing if my guessed answers spelled any funny words on my answer sheet, but was I the only one who found it suspiciously easy?? Like was I just delirious or did it actually make sense?? I was starting to think that my reasoning was just a tad too abstract when i looked around the hall and saw lots of people scratching their heads and giving up early but I think I might have actually gotten A decent score on that. So needless to say I left ucc with something of a spring in my step. Hopefully it wasn’t designed to be deceptively easy because that would suck with a capital PH. There’s aboot 6 days between the closing of cao and hpat results though so there’ll be time to change choices if necessary.(which hopefully it won’t be!) Oh great hpat god, please let me have done well…and if you could, would you please put a word in with your son leaving cert christ?

Well now that that’s over I guess I’m out of excuses for not really caring about the pres,oh dear…. seriously though, pres are pretty amusing in pobalscoil. I find that just sitting back and watching other people stress out is kinda fun,I’m even thinking of inventing an exam time barbie based on my friend’s hair after exams(yes I am referring to YOU sinead!). The only exam which has managed to upset my calm dispsition was maths on thursday. All was going well, english was a doddle and chemistry and french were both oddly easy so I nearly cried when I got into maths and realised that I didn’t have a clue! I Attempted 6 questions but they were some pretty feeble attempts. Afterwards I couldn’t figure out if the questions were weird or if i’m just a total dunce. Hopefully I can make up for it in paper two tomorrow but i highly doubt it. I’m starting to wonder if i’ll even manage to scrape a pass. I think this week in general might just be shit, based on the fact that I have maths 2,history and irish 1&2. It’s one saving grace however is biology which I find i’m actually looking forward to(that’s not weird is it??). I suppose that’s my cue to end this since sadly i have to study for each of the previously mentioned exams.

Hope you’re all as happy as I am with the hpat!

Doctors, C.A.Ah Sure and Only the pres.

February 3, 2010 in Study

Apologies Gaffer.

I got an e-mail and I knew I should post something, but expecting me to do it would’ve been like expecting a Haitian to run a marathon. Pure mean considering the state I was in. Suffering vicious headaches, mucus build up (I’m dead sexy), dry mouths, impoten……. well I felt awful. And the last thing I needed was for the shrew of a doctor to shine a big Jesus arising from the dead-esque light  into my eye to try find the solution to the headaches, then tell me there was little she could do to determine the cause of the problem! We need better doctors medicine students!

Truth be told I would’ve welcomed this dilemma twelve months ago, few days off like boi! But now, yeah it’s hindered the auld study progress. I mean there’s only so much Loose Women and Maury someone can watch. Incidently, you can NEVER have enough Total Wipeout! But the fact that I’m watching Richard Hammond make jokes as brutal as Loose Women, JLS and a relationship with O.J. Simpson all combined on a Saturday night isn’t exactly as good as a few Loose Women out on the town.

But anyway everyone’s probably done their C.A.O.’s. End of story with that, you’ll NEVER get to change that! Phhfftt. Of course you will, people just try scare ya, the facts are that it’s good to give yourself a goal to work towards, but you have until July technically to sort it out! So take it easy, maybe even listen to some Sigur Ros while sipping on Iced-Tea (Mr. Kraft from Sabrina memories btw), chill, relax, it’s not the end of the world as Maury would say. Whether LaBron’s the father or Shaneiequa, as long as the bab……. Sorry, digressing. Some people will make the right choice, some wont, some will end up delighted, some gutted, either way you should just put the task of the C.A.O. in the backseat now until after the exams, hush!

February, pres, mocks, whatever you call them for most students they’re falling on our laps in this month. All I can say from experience is, it’s only the pres! While I’d give The Leaving a capital letter, the pres are so insignificant (well they’re not completely useless but many a flaw do they have) that I don’t value them worthy of one! I mean, last year, jesus, people getting 530 when they end up with 460 in The big LC, others getting 370 when they achieve 450 when it matters come August. Some marks are as inaccurate as Jordan’s chest, or Dannii Minogue’s face for that matter. Don’t squeel crying at some prick grading your questions too poor, the pres are all about experience, timing and the likes. And if you still care, you can get the papers off the internet! Not that I recommend that or anything of the sorts.

Is there a point in the pres for Repeats, without doubt! Especially if they didn’t give a hoot last year. In fact this Sunday last year, I was sessioning on down for the Superbowl throughout the night, how American! Steelers v Cardinals, woohoo! U.S.A., U.S……. Ehm. Needless to say the next day, well school wasn’t an option. Especially when it started snowing! Intense drinking and snow, like Christmas in Poland. You’d be surprised how much one can mature over a year. As Maury would say.

Oh and I’m not impotent.

Ciao and Merci Beaucoup.

Of Golden Globes and Silver Linings

January 14, 2009 in Study

While gasping at the horror of Drew Barrymore’s hair at the Golden Globes, I managed to pull out the HPAT booklet (for which I paid 20 euro, only to get a free, illegally-photocopied copy from someone I dare not mention for obvious reasons) and attempt to do it.

I was equally horrified at how badly I had done.

It was biologically IMPOSSIBLE for me to finish the first part on time. And I got more than a couple of red marks, so that my practice sheet looked like it had bled. Profusely. Like it was hit by a train. Twice.

After that disaster, Ms. Barrymore’s hair looks alright compared to mine. If there ever was a silver lining to my HPAT trial run, it was that I did quite well on the second part. With minutes to spare.

Now, I am actually tempted to re-mortgage my house so that I could afford to do that HPAT “prep” course by the Institute of Education. But, my pride and the very few morals that I have prevent me from doing so. Good for the ego, (possibly) bad for the chances of me being a future underpaid, over-worked, dangerously-caffeinated doctor.

For those sane enough not to want to do medicine, and maybe even those insane ones (Elizabeth, Jane and Jennie), what you have just read might have made little to no sense.

I apologise.
