How do you learn?

January 31, 2010 in Study

Teachers can help you get results by tailoring their lessons so you learn but you’re the one who can really tailor your own study program so that you maximise your learning. Just knowing how you learn can make a major difference when you’re trying to improve your grades.

Everyone learns in different ways but knowing how you learn can make a massive difference to how you progress. There are basically 3 different types of learning styles:

Visual Learners

People who learn by seeing things and remembering how they look. These are identified by the following characteristics, someone that is good at spelling, likes using colours, likes learning by drawing diagrams.

If you like uses images to remember things we suggest you try some of the following: Highlight your notes, draw mind maps to remember stuff, copy notes in class in a style that suits you (maybe use arrow and circles at the side of the page for additional notes to boost your learning.

Auditory Learners

You’re a good listener and love talking. You can stay quiet for too long and has no problems speaking out in front of groups of people. You’ll also probably prefer talking than texting and you’ll enjoy learning languages and listening to music.

We suggest taking your notes in class then creating audio tapes and listen to them over and over again to learn facts and equations of by heart. This may sound like a bit of work but you can download a free recording tool such as Audacity and when you create your tapes you can save them as mp3 and listen to them on your ipod on the way to school or ever at lunch time, you nerd!

Kinesthectic Learners

People who like getting stuck in to tasks and learning by doing. You’re probably pretty active and find it hard to sit still so that you can study. You probably like practical subjects much more than anything else and hate waiting for explanations and just want to get on with it.

We suggest you get together with others and study as a group. Also reduce your study time into short burst and take plenty breaks. Try to break things into practical tasks for yourself. You could also try to create your own learning resources such as memory games.

Search google to find out what type of learning you are and we bet you can boost your grades. You might not have known before now but just reading this article will probably give you a good idea and it may open your eyes up to a whole new way of study that you can create for yourself. If you sound like you may be all 3 learning styles you’re probably a smarty pants! Maybe you knew all this already. Lucky you :)

Speak out.. beat the bully!

January 30, 2010 in Study

How much bullying goes on at your school? Do you stand there and let other students be the victim off bullying? Are you a victim yourself?

Stop! Don’t let this happen. Bullying is disgusting and no one should stand still and ignore it. Speak out, tell your friends, tell a teacher, tell your parents. Make it stop and make it stop now. Bullies or groups of people who bully need to be stopped and although it may seem like the hardest thing in the world to do for the victim. The best and only way to stop it is to speak out!

Bullying is everywhere it Shouldn't be!

If you’re at school and you see someone who gets constantly bullied don’t be afraid to speak out on their behalf! All it takes is one person to stand up to a bully to make them stop. It shouldn’t happen and EVERYONE should do their best to make sure it doesn’t.

If you see someone getting bullied or are a victim yourself, take action now. It might seem like the hardest thing in the world to do but the easiest solution is to tell someone now. There are many different forms of bullying but only one type of bully… a coward!

failure isn’t an option

January 29, 2010 in Study

There are plenty of successful people who have failed their leaving cert / dropped out of school at an early age. You could be another, but the odds are stacked against you ;-)

Most people will admit laziness / lack of effort / lack of interest are the main reasons for failure. Very few ‘failure to success’ stories lack intelligence or lack the mental ability to pass exams, if they did they wouldn’t be successful today.

Natural flair will get you so far – it might get you passed the magic 40% mark in all subjects, but in general if you don’t put in the effort, you won’t get the rewards.

Luck, motivation levels, concentration levels, timing, clarity of thought etc… are things which cannot be banked on. And they’ll play a huge role in your exams. So you don’t want to be banking on all of them going your way on the day – it’s a gamble.

What you can bank on is that you’ll face a gruelling few weeks of exams in june, whether you know your stuff or not. Your brain is your body for this marathon event and if it hasn’t been properly prepared, you can’t expect to cross the finish line…

getting stuff working

January 28, 2010 in Study

We’ve made some more little but important changes to the site…

Google Search

We’re now using google to power searches on the blog. It’s much more powerful than the old search function.

Related & Popular Posts

Underneath every article you’ll see 5 related posts & 5 popular posts. This is to encourage you to read more and stay on the site rather than plough your crops on farmville ;-) This feature was actually on the site since the latest revamp in early january but i had all sorts of problems getting it to work properly.

As i’ve said before, the site is a constant work in progress and as you can see we’re keeping the pace up. Content, content and more content along with new features and tweaks. Over the coming weeks and months we’ll be running competitions and we’ll continue to keep adding features whilst keeping you all updated on what’s happening…

School summed up by Facebook Pages

January 27, 2010 in Study

Facebook – the most productive yet most unproductive tool ever made by man. You can connect with the world and meet new people, share ideas and thoughts… or you can manage your virtual crops & mafia gang.

Either way, you’re on facebook and using it, so we thought we’d put together a list of interesting pages for you (all related to education of course).

Teachers call it cheating, we call it teamwork

There’s a good chance you can relate to most if not all of the above pages. My personal favourite is “When teachers act fake when the principal comes in to the classroom”.

They’re all quite funny because they’re brutally honest as i’m sure you’ll agree. Do you have any more (appropriate!) pages you’d like to see on the list? Drop us a comment below so we can spread the word about them…
